Places to Visit in Australia: 23 Stops and Itineraries 2026

I consider all these things within the same itinerary: where I'll walk in the morning, what time of day will have the best light, where I'll drink good coffee, which market will I see local products in, and whether an experience will truly be worth the money I'm paying.

Australia That's precisely why it's not a country you can explore in a single trip. As you move from Sydney to Melbourne, Cairns to Uluru, Tasmania to Perth, not only the cities but also the climate, cuisine, and travel rhythm change. Instead of trying to cover the whole country on my first trip, I find it more sensible to create a 10-14 day itinerary, including Sydney and Melbourne for the city part and Cairns or Uluru for the nature part. Even Tourism Australia's sample itinerary, covering the country's highlights like Sydney, Uluru, and the Great Barrier Reef, is spread over 10 days.

All prices are in Australian dollars, or AUD. When budgeting, I leave some room specifically for reef tours, BridgeClimb, and seasonal exhibitions. In Australia, what's often expensive isn't sightseeing, but rather boat trips, guides, domestic flights, and special experiences.

Historical Places to Visit in Australia

Sydney Opera House

I don't think it makes much sense for someone visiting Sydney for the first time to skip the Opera House. Its exterior is already etched in the city's memory, but what I really love about it is being able to combine Circular Quay, the Opera House, and the Royal Botanic Gardens in a single walk.

I especially love the mornings. The light from the harbor is softer, and the surroundings are calmer than in the late afternoon. Afterwards, grabbing a coffee and sitting by the water is one of the best ways to get used to Sydney.

I'm budgeting $50 for a guided tour inside in 2026, booking in advance for an adult. The price goes up to $55 if I buy the ticket the same day.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

It's possible to simply take photos and move on from the Harbour Bridge opposite the Opera House. If I want to zoom in on the view, I choose between two options: a more economical bridge and harbour walk or BridgeClimb.

BridgeClimb is one of the most expensive experiences when traveling in Australia. Between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027, a daytime Summit climb costs $375 for adults on weekdays and $385 on weekends. Children's prices start at $160 on weekdays.

The Rocks

In Port Arthur, my eye is also drawn to the food side. Tasmania's seafood, cool-climate wines, and local meats make it easy to combine the historical aspect of the trip with gastronomy.

Fremantle Prison

If I've come all the way to Perth, I make sure to set aside time for Fremantle. It's possible to see the entrance complex of Fremantle Prison for free, but access to the main sections of the prison requires a guided tour.

In 2026, if I choose one of the standard tours like Convict Prison, Behind Bars, or True Crime, I pay $25 for an adult. A two-tour package is $35. The more adventurous Tunnels Tour is $70.

I don't see Fremantle as just a place to visit for the prison. Its port city atmosphere, along with coffee and seafood breaks, easily fills half a day.

Australia's National Parks and Nature Trails

Uluru and Kata Tjuta

In Australia, the place that truly takes me away from the cities is Uluru. I don't see it as a quick day trip from Sydney. Considering the flights, accommodation, and desert conditions, allocating at least two nights is much more sensible.

An adult 3-day pass to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park will cost $38 in 2026. Visitors under 18 can enter for free.

I leave sunrise and sunset to two separate times. I'm not rushing for Kata Tjuta either. Especially during the hot months, hiking hours depend on weather conditions, so it's necessary to completely abandon the pace of city sightseeing in Istanbul when doing a desert trail.

Cultural sensitivity is also important here. Uluru is a sacred site for the Aṉangu people. I view the rules regarding photography, walking, and visiting not just as tourist restrictions, but as a matter of respect for the owner of the land I am on.

Great Barrier Reef

My relationship with the sea, when traveling for culinary purposes, often begins in fish markets, but in Cairns, that relationship changes completely. On the day I went up to the Great Barrier Reef, the focus wasn't on food, but on life underwater.

There's no single "entry ticket" for reef experiences. Prices vary depending on the boat company and package. When budgeting for 2026, I'm basing my calculations on a full-day tour like the Reef Magic departing from Cairns, costing around $325 during off-season periods and $360 during peak season. Snorkeling equipment and some basic activities may be included in the package.

Here, I'm more interested in the time spent at sea, the pontoon or reef spot, snorkeling equipment, and cancellation terms than just the cheapest ticket.

Daintree Rain Forest

Having come all the way to Cairns, dedicating the day after the Great Barrier Reef to Daintree is a wonderful change of pace for the trip. One day I'm among coral reefs, the next day I'm in a tropical rainforest.

From a chef's perspective, what interests me most about Daintree are the tropical fruits. Queensland's warm and humid climate gives me the opportunity to see firsthand the environment in which fruits that I often see imported in Istanbul are grown.

I'm not cramming this into the reef experience on the same day. Both experiences deserve a full day on their own.

Kakadu National Park

I don't see Kakadu as one of Australia's "drive-in, take a couple of photos, and leave" parks. The distances are long, and you need at least two days to experience the rock art, wetlands, hiking, and local culture.

There's an important update here for 2026. For visits between July 1st and October 31st, 2026, the 7-day adult park pass is reduced to $25. The regular dry season price is $40.

Another important detail is that the Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls areas will be closed for infrastructure works throughout 2026. When planning your Kakadu trip, you shouldn't base your route on these two points by looking at old blog photos.

Blue Mountains National Park

If I have a few days in Sydney, the Blue Mountains are my easiest nature escape. The Three Sisters scenery, hiking trails, and the surroundings of Katoomba quickly change the atmosphere after leaving the city.

You don't have to spend money to see nature on foot. If you want to add Scenic World's cable car and train experiences, the daily Unlimited Discovery Pass for adults starts at $64 in 2026.

I prioritize outdoor walking and add Scenic World depending on the time and weather.

Great Ocean Road and Twelve Apostles

The Great Ocean Road is one of the most scenic routes I've taken by car from Melbourne. It's easy to miss the road itself if your only destination is the Twelve Apostles.

I'm not turning this route into a race. The journey gains meaning through stopping at coastal towns, enjoying ocean views, and taking short walks. If I have the time, I prefer to stay overnight rather than doing a one-day round trip.

My chef's instincts come into play here too. Taking breaks for seafood and local produce in small coastal towns along the way is more appealing to me than spending the whole day behind a window on a bus tour.

Grampians National Park

When I want to see a different kind of nature than the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, I choose the Grampians. The scenery here is more about mountains, rocks, waterfalls, and hiking than the coast.

The first and last light of the day are strong for photography, but my main advice is not to underestimate the difficulty of the hike. In Australia, temperature and sunshine can be more decisive than the distance of the trail in kilometers.

Flinders Ranges

When I went to South Australia, Flinders Ranges was one of the places where I completely left the city sightseeing and got closer to the feeling of the Outback. If I'm adding this place to my itinerary, I plan the vehicle, fuel, water, and accommodation in advance.

I don't rush my trip because of the area around Wilpena Pound and the long scenic trails. In Australia, I no longer trust distances to appear small on a map.

Museums to See in Australia

Melbourne Museum

When I encounter a rainy day in Melbourne, instead of changing my plans, I head to the Melbourne Museum. Natural history, Australian culture, and the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre are all under one roof, easily filling a few hours.

General admission fee in 2026 is $18 for adults. Ages 16 and under... çocuklar Free admission. Additional fees may apply for special exhibitions.

National Gallery of Victoria

The NGV is a great stop for me on days when I want to balance my budget in Melbourne. Visiting the main collections is free, and general admission to the Ian Potter Centre continues to be free with NGV International until 2026. Some major temporary exhibitions are also ticketed.

This is also a great spot in central Melbourne to fit coffee, art, and a walk all into one day.

Australian War Memorial

When I go to Canberra, I set aside a few hours for the Australian War Memorial. It's incomplete to view it solely as a collection of military vehicles and objects; reading about the country's war memory through personal stories is far more impactful.

In 2026, admission is free and no advance tickets are required. Galleries are generally open between 10:00 and 17:00.

Powerhouse

Here I am specifically updating a piece of information I frequently saw in older Australian travel writings. The Powerhouse Ultimo in Sydney is currently not open for regular museum visits. It is temporarily closed due to major renovations starting in August 2026.

The new Powerhouse Parramatta is scheduled to open on November 7, 2026. Therefore, if I'm going to Sydney in the fall of 2026, I'm not directly copying the old Ultimo schedule.

Maritime Museum Tasmania

If you're interested in maritime history in Hobart, the Maritime Museum Tasmania is a small but meaningful stop. It becomes even more significant when considered alongside a trip to Port Arthur, where you explore the relationship between island life and the sea.

I'm setting aside $16 for adult admission in 2026. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.

Churches and Religious Buildings in Australia

St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney

Since it's right next to Hyde Park, I'm adding St. Mary's Cathedral to my Sydney walk without having to travel a separate route. Its neo-Gothic architecture and stained glass windows create a beautiful contrast with the modern Sydney skyline.

I'm visiting this place not as an "attraction" like the Opera House, but as a religious building that is still in use. One needs to be more careful with photography during the service.

St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne

Walking around Flinders Street Station and Federation Square, St. Paul's Cathedral is already on your itinerary. It's one of the easiest architectural stops in central Melbourne.

I especially like to go inside for a few minutes of peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the city center. Along with the nearby laneway coffee shops, it fits very well into a half-day city center route.

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne

St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne has a quieter feel to it than St. Paul's. I'm adding it to my itinerary for the day I'll be heading towards Fitzroy Gardens.

For someone who loves Gothic architecture, seeing both cathedrals doesn't create a feeling of repetition; their locations within the city and their surrounding atmospheres are different.

St. George's Cathedral, Perth

On my day in central Perth, I make a walking stop by St. George's Cathedral. It's a small but lovely historical break for those who come all the way to Western Australia and don't want to see only the coast and modern cities.

Sacred Heart Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral

I only plan to visit Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo and Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle if those cities are already on my itinerary. Considering the distances in Australia, changing my route hundreds of kilometers just to see a religious building doesn't seem logical to me.

One of the most important things I learned while traveling around this country is this: trying to cram every beautiful place into one trip doesn't necessarily make for a good itinerary.

Seeing the country's size on a map greatly simplifies route planning. While Sydney, Melbourne, and Cairns may seem like three cities close together, domestic flights become unavoidable on most long-haul routes.

If I have 7 days on my first trip, I wouldn't put Uluru, Perth, and Tasmania in the same itinerary. Ten days is a more comfortable starting time for me. In two weeks, it's possible to see the cities, coast, and Outback of the country without letting one overshadow the other.

Transportation in Australia

When planning a route in Australia, I calculate distance more in terms of time than kilometers. While road travel is possible between cities like Sydney and Melbourne, domestic flights often save days on short trips. Adding stopovers like Cairns and Uluru makes it quite difficult to have an efficient first trip without using flights.

Within the city, Sydney and Melbourne have convenient public transportation options. However, for areas like Uluru, Great Ocean Road, Flinders Ranges, and Kakadu, I'm considering options like driving or organized tours from the outset.

What do I look for in Australia, from a chef's perspective?

In Australia, it's easy to incorporate the food side of the trip into a tour without turning it into a separate gastronomic tour. In Sydney, there's seafood; in Melbourne, coffee culture; in Queensland, tropical fruits; in Tasmania, cold-climate produce; and in Fremantle, seafood cuisine reappears.

I'm more interested in markets, small places using the day's produce, and dishes that reflect the region's climate, rather than tourist menus. In particular, I try not to miss seafood, dairy products, and cool-climate wines in Tasmania; tropical fruits in Queensland; and the diversity created by immigrant cuisines in Sydney and Melbourne.

Things I paid attention to during my trip to Australia.

I don't underestimate distances, I always keep sunscreen in my bag, and I don't plan my national park itinerary based on weather conditions. In areas like Kakadu, road and area closures can change. In Uluru, however, I take into account not only natural conditions but also the visiting rules related to Aṉangu culture.

I also check the visa requirements closer to the travel date. An Australian Visitor visa subclass 600 Tourist stream application from outside the country starts at $250 as of August 2026, but which visa type you are eligible for depends on your passport and purpose of travel.

If the sea is my priority, I'd choose Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef; if I want to experience Australia's interior, I'd go to Uluru. Tasmania, Kakadu, Perth, and the Flinders Ranges can be left for a second trip without losing anything.

In fact, quite the opposite; that's partly how I give Australia its due.
