History of Alanya Castle
Alanya Castle is an important structure that has hosted many civilizations throughout its history. It was first established in the 2nd century BC by the warriors of the Roman pirate Tryhos under the name Korakesion and was used as a strategic base for pirate activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. In 64-65 BC, the Romans captured the castle in order to end pirate activities in the region.
Conquered by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I in 1220-1221, the castle was annexed to the Seljuk lands and restructured. Located at the peak of the peninsula during the Seljuk period, İçkale is notable as the area where Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad's palace was built. In later periods, the castle was sequentially ruled by the Karamanids, Mamluks and Ottomans, and was eventually annexed to the Ottoman lands by Suleiman I.
Today, Alanya Castle is still used as a residential area and the Inner Castle area has been arranged as a museum.
